Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received qualifications in English and African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash in the house of one of jury. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
